When Janie met Vance she had no inkling of the strange and poignant way in which their romance was to develop. Parted after a brief summer of happiness by a misunderstanding that causes Vance to return home to America, it takes Janie some time to conquer her feeling that surely one day they must meet again. Eventually she agrees to marry Tom, with whom she has always had a close relationship, only to discover while in Paris on their honeymoon that it was due to Tom that Vance left her. Unable to remain with her husband she returns home, determined to carry on alone, but her career is interrupted by the birth of a son. Even their child cannot unite Tom and Janie, much to the disappointment of Janie's parents. Not only does Vance stand between them but also their differing attitudes to Janie T career in archaeology a passion she shared with Vance. While Janie is working in South America, a chance meeting with Vance throws her life into chaos yet again: and the illness which strikes her son while he is staying with his father confuses her emotions towards her husband. It seems that for Janie life is one despairing situation after another.
