Pressure, like temperature, is one of the most important parameters governing the state of matter. Modern studies on high-pressure science and technology were started and developed by Bridgman (1882-1961), and one of the most famous topics was synthesis of man-made diamond. Today, high pressure science and technology has expanded into diverse research fields: physics, chemistry, biology, earth and marine science, materials science and technology, electronic and mechanical engineering. Research on solid state physics at high pressure is not only important for elucidating the crystal structure of solids, electronic and mechanical properties of materials, and phase relations on alloys and compounds. It is also essential for providing fundamental numerical data for the design of new materials and the development of various high-pressure treatments and processing. This volume collects together contributions which will provide a complete overview of the most important recent advances in the field of solid materials at high pressure taking place in Japan. The book contains 15 papers dealing with topics such as optical spectroscopy, electronics, synthesis and reaction of solids, and high pressure processing.
